I just looked into and purchased IL2: Battle Of Stalingrad.
Long ago, I played IL2 Sturmovik and IL2:1946. Great WWII flight simulations. The new IL2 is very much still a WWII flight simulation game. Personally, I seem to have an affinity for and am drawn to WWII aircraft. I just prefer that era of craft and flight. I have the WWI Rise Of Flight simulation but simply can't get interested in flying what seem to be its' ultra light craft.
Although the new IL2 is primarily a flight simulation, the developers recently added player driven tanks to the game. Yes.. tanks! I checked it out and they definitely add a new dimension to the game.
Two things I like about IL2 Battle Of Stalingrad and Battle Of Moscow:
1. In spite of very complex flight modeling, the IL2 player is not required to commit routine or mundane operations to memory and repeat them like it is needed in reality. Unlike DCS. DCS is tedious (very realistic but tedious) in my opinion.
2. Adjustable difficulty level allows everyone to set up the sim to their tastes and skill levels.
I agree with your assessment of DCS. Very impressive simulator, but tedious and steep learning curve. I share your love of WW2 fighers as well so I am going to give this one a try!
Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you, and be sure of this, I will be with you always even unto the end of the age. Mathew 28:20
It supports coop, multiplay and setting up ones own server. IL2 also has a very detailed (lengthy and involved) Editor for creating missions and campaigns.
IL2 comes with some flying missions included. Oh, you can start one and put your plane on auto pilot and watch the entire mission play out if you want to. Useful for testing out missions.
I downloaded a lot of missions from the site yesterday.... to eventually play and to examine in the editor for possible modifying for different preferences.
I'm currently tinkering with my FCS HOTAS profile for IL2 tank use. I haven't even looked into setting it up for the aircraft yet. I still have some tank commands to set up ie. Change ammo type, zoom, open hatch etc. Will probably get those keymapped today. Even now, I can easily drive my tank and manipulate the turret and fire the cannon.
I'm looking forward to eventually creating some combined arms missions.
Larger IL2 Keymapping reference images for use when setting up your controller profile. Feel free to download for print out.
